iPhone Tethering On Windows PC Without Installing iTunes
I recently published an article on Enable Tethering On iPhone. After enabling tethering, I tested the iPhone tethering on my Windows Vista laptop with iTunes installed. It worked perfectly fine with the laptop, but when I connected it to the Desktop running Windows 7 without iTunes, the iPhone was not detected as the USB Ethernet adaptor as it did with my laptop.
In this article I will share with you how you can use iPhone tethering on any Windows computer without installing iTunes.
On reading through Whirlpool forums I leant that Apple has some special drivers which allow the iPhone to be used as USB Ethernet Adaptor. These drivers are by default bundled with the iTunes installer. This drivers is also known as the Apple Mobile Device Support (link at the bottom of article).
You can download the Apple Mobile Device Support Drivers which is about 15 MB in size, install it on your windows PC, restart the computer, connect the iPhone to the computer using the USB cable and you are ready to use iPhone tethering without installing full iTunes Setup.
TIP : Carry the Apple Mobile Device Support Driver with you in your iPhone, to do so follow this tutorial –Using iPhone As USB Pen Drive
I have downloaded the mobile device file and ran it on my windows 7. It gets to the end and then throws up an error. is there any way that I can load this or get rid of the error.
Hi there…
Did you test this out?
I’m trying this for days now… I installed Apple Mobile Device Support Drivers, but I always get the message “cable unplugged”.
Did this work for you, install only the “Apple Mobile Device Support Drivers”?
marco
@Macro You need to go to Settings > General > Network > Tethering and turn it on, the cable unplugged problem will be solved.
Thanks. Tested it out on Windows XP. This worked like a charm.
I have a Windows 2003 Server laptop I use for demos. One of the apps I demo has a web component that I want to show on the iPhone so I thought of setting up tethering. After all, it’s free on my Rogers 6 GB account!
I tried to install iTunes 10.1 on it but I received a message saying that Apple Mobile Device Support Drivers are not supported except on XP SP2 and above.
Any ideas on how to install Apple Mobile Device Support Drivers on Win 2K3 Server so that I can use tethering?
Thanks very much,
John
