Dell XPS 14Z Detailed Review– Pictures and Video

If you are looking for a professional grade high performance laptop within a decent budget and you need a Windows laptop, the options maybe limited. There are laptops of professional series but they are mostly dull or limited by graphics performance, of if the graphics are good the battery may not last too long. Well if you want to balance out all the above critical criterions, I have just tested a wonderful laptop for over a week. I have used many laptops so far, some professional series, some consumer series and this one did impress me with some very good features. I am talking about the Dell XPS 14Z – it has been around in the market for quite some time now and the pricing of the product is close to the price of a MacBook Pro for a reason, it does provide similar built quality and similar refinement and battery like which makes it one of the most desirable professional Windows laptops which have good graphics performance.

First thing which impressed me is the packaging of the unit, it was well packages in a thick cardboard box with least clutter and the box contents were the XPS 14Z, some user manuals and driver disks well packed in a paper envelope below the laptop in the same box. The charger was packed in another small black coloured box shipped in the same large cardboard box. Anyways, lets more ahead and talk about the laptop. The USP of XPS 14Z is its performance coupled with its impressive battery life. An intelligent technology adopted in the XPS 14Z is that it uses dual graphics arrangement, this is because graphic cards usually drain battery like anything, so with a dual graphics arrangement, XPS 14Z uses normal in-built Intel graphics with moderate performance and low power consumption, but when you run a graphics performance software, the Nvidia graphics kick in for better graphics rendering but they consume more power too. It makes good sense because most laptop users use graphic intensive softwares much less which is a good way to save battery.

Apart from this, second generation Intel i5 and i7 series processors are also good on power saving. Also high RAM like 8GB on the machine we tested ensures lesser caching on disk, so lesser power usage for disk read-writes, which makes it faster as well as power efficient. If you are a heavy laptop user who runs 5 to 6 softwares at same time and usage is heavy, this laptop should be able to deliver close to 4 hours of battery life on a full charge easily, however for moderate and light users who run one or two light applications, the battery may last between 5 to 6 hours.

Build quality is good and solid, the hinge is strong, graphics are nice and clear, runs smooth and quiet, keyboard is very solid and backlit which is a big advantage for professional users, touchpad is good and multi touch, there are just two USB ports which may be troublesome for some, but usually ok. There is in built SD card reader, HDMI connection, Ethernet etc. It also comes with in built Bluetooth and WiFi.

In short, let me share with you my conclusion of my experience of Dell XPS 14Z.

What I like About Dell XPS 14Z?

  • Performance
  • Graphics quality
  • Build quality
  • Keyboard
  • Cooling
  • Quietness
  • Light Weight and sleek
  • Sturdy
  • Free from clutter
  • Sophisticated and elegant design

What I Don’t Like About Dell XPS 14Z?

  • Only 2 USB ports
  • I prefer matt finish of display, XPS 14Z has glossy, which reflects light. It is good for graphics designers and gamers, but it may annoy business users
  • Battery life could have been better- I am not saying that it is bad, but it could have been better with a larger capacity battery

All in all, I would say Dell XPS 14Z is a 8 out of 10 and which is pretty good, one of the most impressive laptops with professional build and great graphics.
